My boyfriend and I are avid gamers. We've got all the modern video game consoles, and plenty of the older ones as well. We've got an entire bookshelf dedicated to video games – and that bookshelf is FULL. Many of them are PS4 games!

We've got two Sony Playstation 4's, so we can play games together in separate rooms (romantic I know). We often have friends over to game with us, so we have around 5 or so PS4 controllers. I absolutely love the Playstation 4, and it's one of my favorite consoles.

There's really only one problem with it: the controller's lightbar.

Whenever you use a PS4, you have to use a controller. There's a bar on the very top that indicates when it is on. Some games use this light and change the color, others just leave it at it's default blue.

The main issue is that it's just so darn bright!

Ahhh my eyes!

If you're playing a game with the lights off, the light is absolutely blinding. I looked for a way to turn it off, and there isn't one.

So I found another solution.

I saw a ton of PS4 lightbar decals online. I thought about buying some, but if you know me, you'll know that I love the DIY method. I wanted to be able to create my own custom PS4 controller.

I looked around for a template I could use, but for the handful I found, they cost more than buying a huge sheet of premade decals. So I decided to make my own template.

I took a piece of paper and traced the light bar onto it. I scanned it into my computer, and traced over it in Adobe Illustrator. I went through a little trial and error with this method, but I finally got it.

You can download my FREE PS4 light bar decal template at the bottom of this page.

Here's the instructions on how to make a PS4 light bar decal so you can have your very own custom controller.

Supplies needed:

  • PS4 Controller
  • Oracal 631 Vinyl (I used black)
  • Scissors
  • *Cricut Explore / Cricut Maker or Silhouette Cameo
  • Weeding Hook / Tweezers
  • Transfer Tape
  • Cotton Swab or Cotton ball
  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Squeegee (I used the Cricut XL Scraper) or Credit Card

Optional:

*If you don't have a Cricut or Silhouette, you can use:

  • Your home printer
  • Exacto knife
  • Scotch Tape
  • The rest of the supplies listed above

For my first decal, I wanted to try something simple. I didn't want to have to go through the effort of finding a photo online and tracing it.

You are welcome to do this, however please be aware that images you find on Google image search are often trademarked or copyrighted. You can use them for personal use like this, but using them on products you are planning to sell is against the law. You can read more about this here.

I decided to just use the classic phrase 'Game Over'. I know I've seen those words plenty of times in my life!

There are two methods you can use to make your decal. One is to use a vinyl cutting machine. The other is to print out the templates and cut them out by hand.

I have instructions for each below.

Vinyl Cutting Machine Method

Step 1: Open the template in your vinyl cutting software.

Since I'm cutting out my decal with my Cricut Explore Air, I used Cricut Design Space.

Step 2: Type Your Text / Upload the Image you are Cutting Out

If you're using text like I did, try to use a thicker font. It will be easier to weed out later. Resize the text and make sure it will fit over the lightbar with room on either side.

If you are using a picture instead of text, you will want to upload your picture as well. If you're not sure how to upload an image into Cricut, here's how.

Due to the small size of the light bar, you don't want to use anything too complicated. You'll want to stick to images with clear silhouettes.

If you know anyone who plays Fortnite or Call of Duty, I have a feeling that those logos would be a good choice!

After you've uploaded your image, shrink down the logo until it fits over the lightbar with plenty of room on either side.

Step 3: Use the Slice Tool

Since I'm using Cricut Design Space, I'll be providing instructions on how to use the slice tool. If you are using Silhouette Studio or another software, you will have to find instructions if you do not know how to do this part. The steps will likely be very similar however!

Layer the image or text on top of the lightbar template

Select both the template and your image. Then click 'Slice' in the bottom right.

Delete all unnecessary layers.

If you're satisfied with the result, you are now ready to cut!

Step 4: Cut and weed out the decal

I used a 12 x 12 piece of black Oracal 631 vinyl from the Happy Crafters.

After cutting, I used my weeding hook and tweezers to weed out the design.

I then used scissors to cut a rectangle around the decal.

When you are done, you should have something like what is pictured below.

Step 5: Apply the Decal to the Controller

I then placed a piece of transfer tape on top of the vinyl. This part is technically optional, but for easier application I would recommend it. Here's the brand I used.

Take your cotton swab and rubbing alcohol and gently clean off any smudges, fingerprints, and oils from the lightbar on the controller. You want to be careful here, you definitely don't want to spill any liquid inside the controller!

After the rubbing alcohol dries, it's time to apply the decal.

You should turn the controller on at this point. That way you'll be able to see any spots where light may be coming through.

Line up your transfer tape with the decal just over the lightbar. You'll want to get this as exact as you can, so that the only light that comes through is from the parts we cut out.

Apply it slowly from left to right, trying to avoid any bubbles.

Take a squeegee, I used this one, or a credit card, and smooth out any bubbles.

Slowly peel up your transfer tape. A good tip for this is instead of pulling straight up, pull it in the direction you would like it to go. This helps prevent the transfer tape from pulling up your decal. It's a simple tip, but it makes a huge difference.

Congratulations! You now have your very own custom playstation controller!

The Exacto Knife Method

This method is not for the weak of heart. It requires a ton of patience! However if you're extremely careful and take your time, you can absolutely have results that are comparable with a vinyl cutter.

Step 1

Print out the free template provided at the bottom of the page.

Print out the photo or text you would like to cut out. Make sure it is small enough to fit on the lightbar template with room on all sides.

Step 2

Using some scotch tape, tape down your photo or text to your vinyl. Make sure it's taped down on all sides and there are no air gaps.

Being very careful and patient, use your exacto knife to cut out the design. Start from the inside and work your way out. Take breaks if you need to. Make sure you are pressing hard enough to pierce through both the printer paper and the vinyl.

Step 3

When you're finished, remove the tape, printer paper, and any excess vinyl from inside your cutout.

Now you will tape down the light bar template. Make sure the light bar is centered on your design, and isn't upside down.

It would be awful to cut everything out to find that the cut out is skewed too far to the left!

After taping the template, again watching for air gaps, carefully cut around the edges. You'll want to get this as close as you can, so that it fits over top of the light bar.

When you are finished, you'll want to use some scissors to cut around your template. Weed out any leftover excess vinyl, and then follow step 5 above.

Here's the free download for the PS4 Lightbar Decal Template, as well as the Game Over decal I made.

You are welcome to use either of these commercially, however I ask that you please don't sell the templates themselves. I worked very hard on the templates to provide to readers for free.

If you'd like to share the template with others, I ask that you will send them here instead of sharing the files directly. Thank you!
